Athletic Club Femenino succumbed to their great rivals in the final of the Euskal Herria Kopa, the summer tournament for women’s teams in the Basque Country.
The defeat at the Estadio de Garmendipe brings to an end Athletic’s series of six straight titles in the competition and puts Real’s named back on the trophy for the first time since 2012, when they also beat Athletic in the final. In fact, all nine finals of the competition have been contested between these two sides, and Athletic now lead 7-2 on the honours board.
Real Sociedad lead 2-0 at half time thanks to goals from Maddi and Nahikari and Leire Banos wrapped things up ten minutes into the second half. Athletic’s misery was complete when defender Vanesa Gimbert received her marching orders for a second yellow card in the 75th minute.
