Champions League draw: Lyon face Zenit, Benfica and Leipzig

Olympique Lyonnais have been placed in Group G of this season’s UEFA Champions League, where they will face Zenit St Petersburg, Benfica, and RB Leipzig.

It’s a tough draw, but one from which they will harbour hopes of progressing to the knock-out stages, or at least into the Europa League.

It’s a fairly balanced group and all four teams will believe that they have a chance of making it into the top two places. Lyon, in seeding pot three, could certainly have ended up facing much tougher opponents from pots one and two than Zenit and Benfica, so they got lucky on that front, but ended up with the strongest team from pot four in RB Leipzig.

United face Rochdale in League Cup

Manchester United will be at home to near neighbours Rochdale in the third round of the League Cup. The tie is due to be played in the week beginning the 23rd of September.

Here’s hoping that Ole Gunnar Solskjær puts out a decent team and has a proper go at winning the competition as it might be United’s best chance of a trophy this season and a cup run would surely be good for momentum and morale at the club.

Rochdale dispatched Carlisle United 2-1 at home in the second round, having beaten crisis club Bolton Wanderers 5-2, also at home, in the first round.

Southgate announces first squad of the new season

England manager Gareth Southgate has announced his first squad of the new season ahead of the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Bulgaria (Wembley, 05/09/2019, 17:00) and Kosovo (St Mary’s 10/09/2019, 19:45).

It’s a large (25 man) squad with first ever call ups for Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings.

The full squad is:

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Ross Barkley (Chelsea), Ben Chilwell (Leicester City), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Tom Heaton (Aston Villa), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Michael Keane (Everton), Jesse Lingard (Manchester United), James Maddison (Leicester City), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa), Mason Mount (Chelsea), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Liverpool), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Burnley), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Declan Rice (West Ham United), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Atletico Madrid), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Manchester United), Callum Wilson (AFC Bournemouth), Harry Winks (Tottenham Hotspur)

United beat Newcastle and Blackburn at youth level

The youth teams provided some solace for Manchester United fans on another weekend of disappointment for the first team. There’s hope for the future as they have started the season well at both U23 and U18 levels and both teams earned good wins this time out.

The U23s won 4-0 at Newcastle in the Premier League Division 2 with two goals from Tahith Chong and one each from Largie Ramazani and James Garner. That leaves United with two wins from two this season and top of the table on goal difference from West Ham.

The U18s beat Blackburn Rovers 3-1 with two goals from Anthony Elanga and one from Dillon Hoogewerf. They now sit fifth in the north group of the U18 Premier League with six points from three games, three points behind leaders Manchester City.

Manchester United 1-2 Crystal Palace

Manchester United experienced their first defeat of the season and were again made to pay the price of a missed penalty as Crystal Palace left Old Trafford with three points in the bag. It was the first time the Eagles had ever beaten Manchester United in the Premier League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had named an unchanged starting eleven from the side that drew away at Wolves, but they failed to find any sort of form in this encounter and have started the season with the sort of inconsistency that has hampered the last few campaigns. It’s the sort of result that suggests another season of toil ahead and a finish closer to mid-table than the Champions League spots. Even the teams expecting a relegation struggle this season will have home fixtures against the likes of Crystal Palace earmarked as chances to pick up some points, so this scoreline doesn’t bode well for a club with ambitions of a title challenge.

Jordan Ayew put Palace ahead in the 32nd minute, having been one-on-one with De Gea after Lindelof failed to head clear and United squandered a golden chance to equalise when they missed a penalty for the second match running. That came in the 69th minute when McTominay was tripped in the box, but Rashford struck the kick against the post.

Daniel James thought he had rescued a point for United when he scored in the final minute, but the United defence was unable to see out the stoppage time without leaking another goal. This time De Gea was at fault as he let Van Aanholt’s shot creep in at his near post.

This United team is very much a work in progress and the young average age means they must be given time to develop and mature, but at the moment they need to improve in all areas. More solidity at the back, creativity in midfield and clinical finishing up front is required. Also, as one of the senior figures in the team, David De Gea needs to step up and start performing at his best once again. He was poor throughout the second half of last season and cost the team on several occasions. Unless he can recapture his best form, it’s surely worth leaving him out of the team for a while, as Romero is a more than adequate replacement. You can’t keep picking players on reputation alone.

Real Sociedad 3-0 Athletic Club

Athletic Club Femenino succumbed to their great rivals in the final of the Euskal Herria Kopa, the summer tournament for women’s teams in the Basque Country.

The defeat at the Estadio de Garmendipe brings to an end Athletic’s series of six straight titles in the competition and puts Real’s named back on the trophy for the first time since 2012, when they also beat Athletic in the final. In fact, all nine finals of the competition have been contested between these two sides, and Athletic now lead 7-2 on the honours board.

Real Sociedad lead 2-0 at half time thanks to goals from Maddi and Nahikari and Leire Banos wrapped things up ten minutes into the second half. Athletic’s misery was complete when defender Vanesa Gimbert received her marching orders for a second yellow card in the 75th minute.

Haro 1-4 Bilbao Athletic

Bilbao got their season off to a dream start with a 4-1 win away at the Estadio de El Mazo to sweep aside Haro and go joint top of the Segunda Division B Group 2 table on the opening day of the season.

They had to come from behind too, having conceded in only the third minute of their campaign when Ballardo found the net for Haro.

Jon Morcillo equalised in the seventeenth minute and it was deadlocked at the interval but Morcillo struck again early in the second period to give Bilbao a lead that they never relinquished. Andoni Tascón soon added to the advantage and defender Daniel Vivian wrapped things up with the fourth twenty minutes from full time.

Getafe 1-1 Athletic Club

Athletic Club followed up their sensational opening day win over Barcelona with a useful point at Getafe to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2019-20 La Liga season.

They enjoyed a great start to this match too, with Raul Garcia giving them the lead in only the fifth minute at the Estadio Alfonso Perez, but Mata equalised for Getafe only seven minutes later and, with that, the scoring was done for the night.

Last weekend’s hero Aritz Aduritz was brought off the bench to replace Beñat with twenty minutes to go as Athletic chased the win, but there was to be no repeat of his heroics and they had to settle for the draw.

Montpellier 1-0 Olympique Lyonnais

Lyon disappointingly fell to their first defeat of the season away at Montpellier on Tuesday night in a match shown live on BT Sport in the UK. It was a chance to reclaim their position at the top of the Ligue 1 table from Rennes, and maintain a one hundred per cent record at the start of the season, but it wasn’t to be as they never really got going.

Coach Sylvinho picked an unchanged starting line-up for the third game running, but despite their increasing familiarity with one another, the team looked disjointed and lacklustre.

Joachim Andersen was having a tough time of it in central defence and he conceded a penalty in the 37th minute for a needless shirt pull that didn’t even require confirmation from VAR. Why players are stupid enough to pull a shirt inside the box in these days of VAR I don’t know, because there’s little chance of getting away with it. Certainly not when it’s as blatant as Andersen’s offence. He’ll have to wise up and adjust to the new system if he’s to be a success at the club.

Fortunately for Andersen the penalty was struck against the post by Delort, but Lyon’s reprieve didn’t last long as they fell behind to a thunderbolt from Souquet on the volley following a poorly cleared corner.

Lyon lacked the attacking verve of their recent displays and never looked particularly threatening. There was precious little interplay between their forwards, and far too much eagerness to shoot from distance, even when a team mate was better placed. If they’re going to keep shooting from outside the box then they’d better start hitting the target and testing the ‘keeper a bit more frequently.

Lyon’s task became all the harder in the 52nd minute when left-back Koné was given a straight red card for a headbutt on Delort. It was the intent rather than the contact itself, which was minimal, but Delort nevertheless went down as though he’d been shot in the face rather than tickled by the tips of some dreadlocks. Above all, Koné was punished for his stupidity. It was an aggressive rather than violent action, but the referee had no hesitation in brandishing the red card without recourse to VAR.

Like Andersen, Koné is another one who will need to adapt quickly to a VAR world. You just can’t hope to get away with these things anymore, even if the referee misses them. It wasn’t a glorious evening for the new signings in Lyon’s back line!

On a positive note, the ten men did make a fist of chasing an equaliser and looked the better team for short periods, but were unable to break down a resolute home defence. Sylvinho was positive, bringing Cornet and Terrier off the bench, but they ended the game with only Aouar as a recognised midfielder on the pitch and perhaps had too many square pegs in round holes to get back on level terms.

USM Endoume Catalans 1-1 OL Reserves

The Olympique Lyonnais B team made it four points from three games so far in their National 2 Group D campaign with a creditable 1-1 draw away at US Marseille Endoume Catalans.

Joint managers Gueïda Fofana and Philippe Bizeul saw their team fall behind to an early strike from Hammoud, which Anthony Racioppi in the Lyon goal was helpless to prevent.

However, Lyon fought back well in the second half and striker El Hadj Coly made a strong run into the box, provoking a foul and penalty, which he himself converted in the 49th minute. On the balance of play, a draw was probably a fair result.
