Dutchman Wout Poels, riding for the Bahrain Victorious team, won stage 20 of the 2023 Vuelta a EspaƱa from Manzanares El Real to Guadarrama. It was a hilly course profile, with ten third category climbs along the 208 km route, and it came down to a tight finish between a small group of riders.
Poels just managed to edge out Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel on the line, with Pelayo Snachez Mayo in third and Lennert Van Eetvelt in fourth both also recording the same time of 4 hours, 59 minutes and 29 seconds.
The main GC contenders finished just over ten minutes down, and there was no change in the podium positions, with the American Sepp Kuss retaining the race lead and red jersey. He has now all but secured his maiden grand tour title, with only the ceremonial final stage into Madrid remaining.
